Carrollton’s Library Turns Halloween Into a Week-Long Event — Then Goes Full Dinosaur
The last week of October and the first days of November tend to blur into a sugar-fueled scramble for most Carrollton families. The Carrollton Public Library is offering a practical reason to slow down and stop in — twice.
First comes Books for Treats on Halloween itself. Then, the moment November arrives, the library pivots hard into dinosaurs.
Books for Treats: October 31, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
The library’s Halloween tradition is straightforward and genuinely useful for families already planning to be out in costume. On October 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., anyone who shows up to the Carrollton Public Library in costume gets to pick a book for a treat.
All ages are welcome. There is no registration, no fee, and no complicated process — just come dressed up and walk out with something to read. For parents who want to balance the candy haul with something that will last past November 1, this is an easy stop to work into the day.
The library has run this program long enough that it has become a genuine neighborhood ritual. Given the hours, it works equally well as a morning outing before school parties or an early-afternoon stop before neighborhood trick-or-treating begins.
Dino-vember: November 1–4 at Josey Ranch Lake Branch
The library does not ease into November quietly. Starting the very next day after Halloween, it launches Dino-vember — a dinosaur-themed programming week that runs through November 4.
The anchor event is a screening of The Good Dinosaur on Saturday, November 1, from 2 to 3:40 p.m. at the Josey Ranch Lake branch, located at 1700 Keller Springs Rd. Families looking for a low-key post-Halloween afternoon that does not involve more candy will find this a reasonable fit.
Story Times Spread Across the Week
Dino-vember Story Times run at both library branches on November 2, 3, and 4. The multi-branch format matters practically: residents closer to one location than the other have options without making a cross-town trip.
Story times at public libraries in Carrollton tend to draw a consistent crowd of toddlers and early-elementary-age kids, and a dinosaur theme is reliably high-interest for that age group. Parents who have not already registered their children for library programs this fall should check current availability on the library’s calendar, since popular sessions can fill.
Why the Back-to-Back Timing Works
The sequencing here is deliberate and parent-friendly. Books for Treats gives families a reason to engage with the library on one of the busiest days of the year for kids. Dino-vember then provides structured programming across the first four days of November — a period when school is back in session, the Halloween energy is fading, and many parents are looking for something to anchor the week.
For families who have not yet made the Josey Ranch Lake branch a regular stop, this two-week stretch is a natural entry point. The branch at 1700 Keller Springs Rd serves a significant portion of Carrollton’s residential population and offers parking that makes a midday or after-school visit workable.
What Else the Library Has Going This Month
For those already building library visits into the October–November schedule, a few other programs are worth noting.
Free drop-in math tutoring for students in kindergarten through 12th grade runs at the Josey Ranch Lake branch on October 24 and October 31, both from 10 a.m. to noon. That October 31 session overlaps with Books for Treats, so a family could reasonably do both in a single visit — homework help in the morning, costumes and book selection before noon.
On November 8, the library hosts “Planning for Pollinators,” a community education program on pollinator gardening and habitat planning, running from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Josey Ranch Lake branch. It is a different audience than the Halloween and dinosaur programs, but it reflects the library’s broader role as a community gathering space beyond children’s programming.
The monthly Momentum Mondays: Biz Builders workshop series, a partnership between the library and the SCORE Dallas Chapter, continues on the second Monday of each month for small business owners and entrepreneurs.
